In the first week, the classes were geared towards the introduction of the master’s degree. At the personal level, this meant getting to know the team, the teachers and the Inspirational Professor – the “Inspirador” – that will serve as a guide to the team. In the other hand, at the academic level, the focus was on better understanding the workflow of the degree and the technologies that are going to be used.
The course unit of “Engenharia do Conhecimento” (ENGCIA) was mostly theoretical, exploring the origins, use cases and inner workings of Expert Systems, which will be the first challenge of the degree.
On the other hand, In the course unit of “Paradigmas de Programação em Inteligência Artificial” (PPROGIA), the focus was on getting familiar with logic programming and PROLOG’s syntax by resolving various introductory exercises.
We also delved into some possible themes for our Expert System, and landed on 4 main ideas:
Identifying the type of a device connected to a grid by its energy consumption patterns
Identifying possible damages to a connected device by analysing abnormalities in its consumption patterns
Management of smart devices in order to reach a consumption goal
Management of the battery of an electric vehicle in order to maximize its usage and market tariffs
